I Quit Deodorant and This is What Happened

Find out what you REALLY smell like, by going on a deodorant strike!

If you haven’t considered quitting deodorant yet, then it’s definitely worth a try. It won’t work for everyone, but you will in a scent discover things about yourself.

How it started

My partner ran out of deodorant and kept forgetting to buy one. After a week of using zero deodorant, he encouraged me to do the same!

I was extremely uncertain about trying this. After years of religiously used Dove’s Mushroom top moisturiser deodorants since a teenager. Aerosols never worked for me. I was highly hormonal and they could never uphold! My fear was if I didn’t apply deodorant, I would smell awful!

Luckily this came at a time where I was about to be off work for 2 weeks, this undoubtedly was my window. I also wasn’t willing to subject people to what I may end up smelling like.

5 Reasons to Quit Deodorant?

1. Unknown Chemicals

A lot of counter top deodorants are filled with a lot of questioning toxic chemicals. Like most things we buy, we a see list of ingredients and have no idea what they are.

After doing some research, (Which I won’t bore you with in this blog) I found that there are a few chemicals that we should be wary of. madesafe.com who have provided a list and information on this.

2. The Cost

Now a lot of us out there have switched to natural alternatives, but in these times, they can add up to be a bit pricey.

So why not save Money and go natural at the same time! Even if it’s just for a little while.

3. Discover your natural smell

If you are like me and have been using deodorant ever since puberty started then you will not know what you actually smell like. Using deodorant gives us a manufactured scent. You more than likely will find out that you don’t even smell that bad.

4. Allow your body to sweat!

Your body naturally sweats to maintain the temperature of the body, but it also pushes toxins out of the body. When we use certain deodorants they specifically work as a plug to stop your sweat glands from sweating. This as a result, can cause your armpit to clog up. Allow your body to sweat out the toxins.

5. There are rumours that frequent use can lead to Breast Cancer

This is still up for debate between scientists, But there are in-fact scientists out there that believe that frequent use of deodorant may lead to Cancer. Their are particular ingredients in deodorants that can sometimes mimic estrogen, increased estrogen can consequently lead to breast cancer

You Will Smell!

We didn’t start at the same time, but we had a similar first week experience. In the first few days of not using deodorant was alarmingly scenty.  We did not smell pleasant at all! Which I am sure you can only imagine.

But we continued to wash the smell away day and night. Your body is clearing out on any toxins and aluminium that has been absorbed in the skin.

You will smell Less

Interestingly! By the end of both our first week the smell had reduced by a great deal. I couldn’t even scent a warm smell after a full day.

This was amazing! I thought this is it! I am never going back! Had I spoke too soon?

After the first week me and my partner have found different results as time went on

It Works for some

It has been 4 months of No deodorant for my partner and I have to say he smells yummier then ever!! I remember his high pit scents after a long day at work. It would light up my nostrils! But since he stopped using deodorant he just smells like clean washing! I genuinely have not smelt a bad smell of him since

It May not work for everyone…….Yet!

I went back to work! I didn’t want to give in on what I felt was a break through. But I quickly started to smell a warm scent that I can only describe as baked beans. The he mushroom top after a few days back, I could not go to work with this strange new scent

Having started a week behind my partner and I probably needed to allow my body more time to adjust. I definitely have not given up. But for the meantime I have found an alternative, until I find another way.

Eventually I let go of my Dove deodorant, and opted for a natural deodorant made by Mitchum. The ingredients consist of bamboo powder and coconut oil. My armpits loved it straight away, it smells lovely and it does the job.

However It still contains indigents that I am unfamiliar with, therefore I am still on the hunt for a more natural alternatives out there. I promise to keep you posted on my journey to go all natural.

My Tips On Quitting Deodorant

  1. Be patient! You have to give your body time to push out the toxins. Studies have shown that this may take up to 30 days to detox from the aluminum that has been absorbed.
  2. Wash Regularly! Wash your armpits day and night daily, at least. Keep yourself fresh smelling.
  3. Shave. Hair on your armpits will only hold any scents.
  4. Use ‘Bi Carb’ when washing this will help to neutralise any lingering odours.
  5. Be Excited to find out what you actually smell like rather than what you have been told to smell like. Hopefully it’s not like baked beans!
